I went to Italy last year, had a great time by the way, but did my feet every hurt!
I know, uncomfortable shoes are the worst, but nevertheless I had them.
We were gone for 3 weeks, staying in 6 cities and hit just about every museum and church we could find (hubby is a museum and art fan). There were days we walked as much as 12 miles, oh my aching feet!
We traveled with 10 people and everyone but me walked in comfort.
How dumb is that!
Here are the shoes I brought.

These are comfortable shoes as shoes go, I even broke them in by wearing them on my 2 mile walk that I do every day, and they were great. The thing that I didn’t realize is that a shoe itself can be comfortable but the bottom of your foot will begin to notice hard surfaces after about 2 miles of walking if you have the wrong shoe, which is exactly what happened to me.
As I approached 3 miles of walking each day my foot began to hurt on the heel and the ball.
In Europe all streets, museums, churches, everything has concrete, stone or marble surfaces and they get HARD! It’s not like here where you can find the occasional wood surface which is easier on your feet.
So, let me impress upon you, don’t make the mistake I made. Get a comfortable shoe that has a sole that won’t let your foot feel the hardness of the ground surfaces. The sole should be thick, pliable and cushiony. Keep in mind that even my Dr. Scholl’s insoles didn’t help, that’s how bad these shoes were on my feet.
So this never happens again, I checked with the members of the group we traveled with and here are a few of the shoes they brought on the trip. I know for a fact these folks were comfortable, so take note.
All these shoes can be found at Zappos Shoes:

Ecco Soft V - Eccos are recommended by Rick Steves

Mephisto Rush - Pricey but one of the BEST!

Merrell Moab Ventilator
None of these shoes will be making a fashion statement, but I’ve learned that fashion isn’t what you want to go for if you want to be comfortable.
Stick with comfort and you’ll enjoy your trip a WHOLE lot more, believe me …been there done that.
