How do you know when it’s time to toss those old running or walking shoes and break down for a new pair?

If you’re like me, a comfortable shoe is hard to get rid of.  But there just comes a time when you gotta get brave and trust that it’s time to get a new pair.

Shoes are supposed to protect your feet and a shoe’s protection only lasts so long.  Most of us simply wait until our shoes have the obvious worn tread or have holes in them.  This is not a good guideline.  Actually, once the tread is worn down the actual stability of the shoe is most likely long gone.

Wow, flashback to the 70’s … the Earth Shoes are back!   But today however, the styles have much improved there’s a whole lot more selection to choose from:


   

But Earth shoes are really more about what’s good for your back and alignment as they are about fashion. 

The earth shoe has a slight incline of about 3.7º which also offers support through the arch.  This incline and arch support system positions your body for optimal posture.  In addition the benefits of spinal alignment encourage your shoulders to roll back as you walk which also contributes to improving your overall posture.

But get this, earth shoes also claim to help you burn calories, it’s all part of the shifting of your weight backwards.  You burn calories by strengthening and toning your body.  Hmmm …they didn’t tell me that back in the 70’s.

As for comfort, they offer a lot of it, since earth shoes reduce lower heel pressure and promote better posture they are a great choice for helping keep your body and back in alignment.

I’m all for ‘different’ but this isn’t what I had in mind.  A boot with an open toe and open heel just doesn’t make a great fashion statement.

Although I’ve got to say with a croc-patterned jacquard fabric with patent leather straps, there’s no scrimping on quality, but it seems a shame to waste such quallity material on such an ugly shoe. 

This gets my ugly Friday shoe award!

When I was heavily into walking my instructor told me to roll my foot as I walked from heel to toe. 


The more I did this the more of a workout I felt my legs got.  I don’t have back problems so I didn’t feel a difference there but I’ve been told that this type of walking stride is also good for your back.

Well, that was about 8 years ago and low and behold today there is shoe designed to help you roll your foot as you walk. It’s the MBT shoe, now why didn’t I think of that?
