When I was heavily into walking my instructor told me to roll my foot as I walked from heel to toe.

The more I did this the more of a workout I felt my legs got. I don’t have back problems so I didn’t feel a difference there but I’ve been told that this type of walking stride is also good for your back.
Well, that was about 8 years ago and low and behold today there is shoe designed to help you roll your foot as you walk. It’s the MBT shoe, now why didn’t I think of that?
Now I haven’t yet bought a pair of MBT shoes just yet, the soles on these shoes are curved and they would have been perfect for me 8 years ago with my rolling action going on.
Today, I’m still rolling on my own, mainly because I haven’t gotten use to the MBT look; I’m a bit more fashion conscious and I like my Adidas. Plus, at $250 a pop I think I might have to wait for a really good MBT sale.
Buy hey, we’re talking health shoe here and isn’t that really what’s most important? After all I do walk to stay healthy so why not buy a shoe that helps with posture as well as strength? I’ll just have to get over my frugalness which probably won’t take long as these shoes are actually beginning to appeal to me more and more.

MBT, which stands for Masai Barefoot Technology is also referred to as physiological footwear. The inventor got the idea from the Africa Masai Tribe because he noticed the benefits of a bare foot walking on natural surfaces and apparently Masai members are strong and fast and don’t suffer from bad knees, backs or feet.
Here’s an interesting fact; the shoe is designed to be unstable because it forces the wearer to work muscles that they don’t usually use to help you stand upright. Additionally MBT claims that you use 2.5% more oxygen when wearing these shoes. Ok, sounds good.
To support that I was reading somewhere that people who wear them have less pressure in their lower back, one person said he felt he could even breathe better as if his diaphragm had more room, so he also had more energy. Hmmm, sounding really good!
Here are a few things to note about MBT shoes:
- They are heavy. That probably adds to the muscle benefit
- You could trip a little while getting use to them. It helps pick up your feet a little higher when stepping up or over things.
- They won’t make a fashion statement. In fact they’re a little on the ugly side.
- For the $250 price tag, they are durable and made very well.
Make sure that you take the time to get a good fit. Since the function of the MBT is to benefit and smoothen the transition within your entire foot and strike activity, you want a good, comfortable fit.
MBT’s can be found at Zappos and Amazon, however I found the cheapest prices for mbt shoes at Amazon.
